Lava Butte from Lava Lands Visitor Center is a 3.8 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Bend, Oregon that offers scenic views and is rated as moderate. Lava Butte is one of the most attractive volcanoes/mountains in the region. Beautiful views on a clear day- saw Mt Bachelor, Tumalo mountain, three sisters and broken top! Easy. Pretty sure last time I walked up there the road wasn't so nicely paved. The trail dips sharply downhill with impressively large tree stumps on either side before reaching the log crossing over the Wind River at about 0.5 miles. From the south get off of the Cottonwood Road and take it north for 2 miles as it parallels Highway 97 before it goes underneath Highway 97 and right to the Lava Lakes Visitors Center. Lava Butte is a very popular sight, so access is limited to 30 minutes on high use days. A short rocky trail encircling the crater at the top of Lava Butte, offering 360-degree views and an active fire tower. The woods were beautiful, too. I had been working in the area and wanted to take advantage of the long daylight hours and beautiful weather, so I decided to hike up Lava Butte. Trail of the Molten Land This 1.1-mile long paved partial loop cuts through Lava Butte Lave Flow and is packed with information and views. Butte Lake Rd closed for winter. A mild peak, it offers a workout for your legs while hopping the dark, iron oxide covered lava rocks. You are not likely to see anyone else on this hike. The fire tower was great with a room to get out of the wind. Stop 2 & 3. Standing tall and proud and rising up over 600 feet, Lava Butte is where you can get some of the best views of the lava flows that occurred approximately 7000 years ago. There was still patches of snow along the trail to the Lava Butte but it was starting to melt. Cool hike, but not my favorite. Hike on the level through the huckleberry understory and pass through a clearing and keep straight at the Toutle-Blue Lake Wild Gravel Trail Junction. Really nice views from the top! A road runs right up to the wash acroos which Lava Butte rises majestically from the desert floor. Nice hike during the off season when cars are not on the road. This is a great cardio hike, even thought it's a short hike, the peak itself is steep, will get you breathing fast and that heart rate up. Nice views at the top. 4:00 p.m. Lava Butte can be seen from pretty much anywhere in Henderson, its dark outline forming a nice little bump on the horizon. I recommend taking water to quench your thirst as the climb is up, up, upward—with respite. What it lacks in height it compensates for in its shape, color and setting. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, there is a shuttle running from the Lava Lands Visitor Center that can also bring you up to Lava Butte. Steady climb all the way to the top but not too long. Both Lava Butte and the lava field are made up of basalt (extrusive igneous rock), which comes in many forms depending on its particular chemical composition and the manner in which it cooled.
